Authors don’t usually like doing marketing. But it’s no secret nowadays that authors MUST do their own marketing if they want to get decent publishing deals. The most successful authors treat their books like businesses. And businesses are 80% sales and marketing and 20% content and infrastructure.
So for authors just starting their marketing platform, here are three simple steps to help establish your priorities:
Get an optin page, so you can build your list of followers. It’s critical that an author has a following. This can be accomplished by giving something away on an “optin page.” We discussed optin pages in the last two Waterside Insider newsletters.
Reach an audience through media appearances, including internet radio, traditional radio and TV, magazines, newsletters, ezines, podcasts and everything you can get. Not sure how to get this without spending a fortune on publicity? Check out the Waterfront Radio Show Blast opportunity.
In all public appearances, radio shows, and media events, be sure to URGE your listeners to visit your optin page to get the free gift you have for them. Say these words: “visit my site at www.mysite.com to get the free gift I have for you.”
Once you have built a following of around 3000 people, you are ready for the next phase of your marketing — the Joint Venture.
