Robert A. Nagourney, MD, is the medical and laboratory director at Rational Therapeutics, Inc., in Long Beach, California, and a clinical professor of gynecologic oncology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology.

Dr. Nagourney received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Boston University and his doctorate of medicine at McGill University in Montreal, where he was a University Scholar. After a residency in internal medicine at the University of California, Irvine, he went on to complete fellowship training in medical oncology at Georgetown University, as well as in hematology at the Scripps Institute in La Jolla.

During his medical oncology fellowship at Georgetown University, Dr. Nagourney confronted aggressive malignancies for0 which the standard therapies remained highly unsatisfactory. Responding to an unmet need, he pioneered the development of “personalized cancer therapy,” applying a laboratory platform to match patients to therapies based on their unique response profiles.

As the founder of Rational Therapeutics, Dr. Nagourney has led in the development of “functional profiling” in human tumors. Using human tumor microspheroids isolated directly from surgical specimens, this platform known as the Ex Vivo Analysis of Programmed Cell Death (EVA-PCD®) measures drug-induced programmed cell death. The EVA-PCD has been shown to be a robust method for the prediction of clinical response to therapy.

With more than twenty years experience in this field, Dr. Nagourney has authored numerous manuscripts, book chapters, and abstracts. As a co-investigator on national cooperative trials, he introduced the use of platinum/gemcitabine doublets in the management of advanced ovarian and breast cancers, treatments that today are used around the world.

Dr. Nagourney resides in Long Beach, California with his wife and two sons.

Dr. Robert Nagourney felt like he had made a terrible mistake. As an oncology fellow, his lifelong desire to be a healer and a physician had been replaced by his role as an administrator of toxic, ineffective chemotherapies. His patients weren’t only dying, he was poisoning them. He resolved that the remainder of his career would be dedicated to finding better, innovative ways to treat cancer.

By rethinking what cancer is and how it behaves, Dr. Nagourney developed a smarter, more effective way to treat cancer patients. As a physician scientist he discovered a method that would identify the chemotherapy drugs, combinations or targeted agents most likely to induce an individual patient’s cancer cells to die. Outliving Cancer is the story of his journey and the patient’s that inspired him along the way.

Groundbreaking WeJIT technology paired with riveting true story wins the Digital Book World award

Waterfront Digital Press and author, JD Messinger, were honored in the 2012 Digital Book World as the recipients of this year’s Publishing Innovation Award for the best nonfiction ebook. The announcement was made today at the Digital Book World Conference + Expo at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. The award honors “the most innovative ebooks, enhanced ebooks, and book apps in 14 categories.

The innovation that Messinger developed and Waterfront produced was the idea to merge multiple media—art, music, audio and video—with the WeJIT multi-way collaboration device. The ebook 11 Days in May: The Conversation That Will Change Your Life, published by Waterfront Digital Press and created by Vook, uses Democrasoft’s WeJIT technology to allow readers to communicate directly with the author and with each other, from topic-based discussions within the ebook. These discussions are made possible with embedded links in the ebook that connect readers in an embedded online discussion space where they can engage with each other in various types of structured discussions. For example, when Messinger writes that his dreams were the source of his inventions, the WeJIT hyperlink in the book asks the readers to vote and share comments on the question, “Can dreams be a source of inspiration?” Ninety-four percent of readers currently vote “yes”.

11 Days in May is a story of personal exploration and transformation, and was triggered by the true story of Messinger’s near-death experience when as a corporate chief executive he broke his neck and left his body. After experiencing prophetic visions and a sixth sense following his accident, Messinger embarked on a spiritual journey that lasted a decade. The award-winning book was written over the course of eleven days in May 2012, hence the title 11 Days in May. When envisioning the ebook, “I was inspired to create a total immersion experience,” says Messinger. “What that meant I wasn’t exactly sure, I just knew that I needed to somehow make 11 Days in May not just an engaging book, but an interactive story.”

Through the enhanced version of the ebook, readers can respond to Messinger when he asks questions like who am I, why am I here, and where did I come from. Thirty-two embedded WeJITs link readers to a collection of one-page websites, each dedicated to a particular topic of discussion or debate. William Gladstone, founder and CEO of Waterfront Digital Press, notes that readers of the ebook can forward the URL link for any embedded WeJIT to anyone through social networks like Facebook or Twitter, even to those who don’t yet have the book and might not have heard of it.

He was also a senior acquisitions editor for McGraw-Hill. More importantly, he’s an author just like you—with more than 20 books published by major publishers including HarperCollins, Wiley, AMACOM, Sterling, and McGraw-Hill.

As Editorial Director for America Online, Brad created the book imprint: AOL Press. He developed books selling from 50,000 to 1 million copies per year, working with authors such as Michael Wolff and Seth Godin. Brad also worked for the first e-book publisher—MightyWords—-so digital publishing comes second nature to him.

Throughout his career, Brad’s focused on developing successful and interesting books for the trade. At McGraw-Hill, he acquired, developed, and helped market more than 250 titles in the areas of entrepreneurship, Internet marketing, programming, computer certification, careers, e-commerce, and many other titles both technical and nontechnical.

For the past few years Brad’s worked fulltime as an author, both on his books and on those of other authors whom he has mentored.

Specialties:
E-commerce, social media and social commerce, careers, entrepreneurship, general business, health and fitness

Education:
BA, (Communications) Rutgers College
Graduate-level coursework in nonfiction writing, Temple University

Recommendations:
Tara Gladstone
Writer/Editor at Freelance Writing and Editorial Services
Brad was my writing coach for a book for McGraw-Hill. His advice and encouragement helped me believe in myself, and create a final product that makes me proud. He cheered me on when I was moving in the right direction, and gently guided me down new paths when other choices were more appropriate. I am so honored to have learned from such a pro! I highly recommend him. He is an encouraging, clear, and thoughtful writing consultant. If you have the chance to work with him don’t pass it up; he will help your idea materialize.

Marjorie McAneny
Senior Editor at Jossey-Bass, an imprint of John Wiley & Sons
I had the pleasure of working with Brad and Deb Schepp while I was an editor at McGraw-Hill. Brad & Deb did a superb job on their book, EBAY POWERSELLER SECRETS. They are consummate professionals and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with them.

Bill Gladstone
Owner, Waterside Productions
Brad Schepp was one of the most effective acquisitions editors I have worked with. He was a good negotiator able to get straight to the point. He also demonstrated a good intuition about choosing the right books and authors, and I believe almost all of the projects I sold him more than earned out their advances. Brad also has that rare ability to see the next “big thing” before others and come up with suggestions for book topics for the authors he worked with.

We’re part of a powerful new technology that will enable authors and publishers to use their eBook editions to build communities of interest and sell more books.

It’s the future of publishing and the application is called a WeJIT and the WeJIT can be embedded in the eBook version of any book you may be writing or have already written. By installing WeJITs in your eBook, you can create instant communities around individual topics in your book and interact directly with your readers while your readers interact with other readers and potential new readers.

The WeJIT can be sent to a friend who has not yet read the book you are reading and expose them to the book in a way that will engage them around a particular topic, while also allowing them to instantly purchase the book. The person who has participated in any WeJIT in your book can instantly return to reading the passage that prompted the originating comment.

One early technology reviewer remarked on how the WeJIT allows a whole new level for keeping margin notes which can be shared with friends or re-read by the original note-taker months or even years later.

Joe Wikert of O’Reilly’s _Tools of Change_ also sees the power and value of WeJITs.Click here to read his short interview about WeJITs for authors.

To see WeJITs in action, I strongly suggest that you purchase an eBook copy of JD Messinger’s 11 Days in May to see how JD has successfully incorporated 32 WeJITs into his eBook and how they are engaging and increasing his readership. Although you should purchase a copy of the eBook to see how the WeJIT looks INSIDE the book itself, click here for just one WeJit example outside the book (after the reader clicks to participate).

You can also visit www.mywejit.com for more info on how WeJITs can change the way people come together online.

Waterside Discount on WeJIT

Waterside is representing Democrasoft, the technology company that created the WeJIT and can arrange a special rate of $99 instead of the normal retail price of $199 for licensing the use of the WeJIT in your next eBook. Contact Eugene Schwartz at Eugene@waterside.com, vanessa@waterside.com, or Jack Jennings at jackjk@aol.com for further details.

Below is part of a letter from Democrasoft founder Richard Lang which describes just some of the applications of the WeJIT. My focus, as always, is on books, but clearly the WeJIT can be a powerful tool for online courses, online newsletters, online publications and simple-to-use, collaborative decision making. I am pleased to be part of this new collaborative technology which should enhance reading experiences for everyone.

Bill Gladstone,
Founder, Waterside Productions Inc.

MOVING FROM “ME” TO “WE”

Whether the subject at hand relates to family, friendships or the future of the planet, all of us are constantly affecting our collective future. The next wave of social connectivity, common purpose, is now upon us, and so is a new collaboration language for coordinating that connectivity. A new way of empowering ourselves online has arrived, and it’s called the WeJIT.

WeJIT is a very simple, but extremely powerful online collaboration tool that goes anywhere.
It allows anyone to give birth to an instant, engaged community around any topic. It enables anyone to instantly create a one-page website that collects votes, comments and results (and that you can embed almost anywhere). And it eliminates the “reply-to-all” email mess that wastes so much of our valuable time. There’s no new organization to join, no software to learn, and virtually no learning curve.

WeJITs embed in other platforms and applications. The world’s very first two-way interactive eBook has just been announced. (http://finance.sfgate.com/hearst.sfgate/news/read?GUID=22070897).

Now, thanks to the WeJIT, readers and authors can easily connect with each other around any discussion topic, from right inside the e-book. WeJITs can be integrated in any e-publication, as well as in any blog or website. The possibilities really are endless.

It’s the power in a clear and common purpose. It’s the power in We.

Sincerely,

Richard Lang
Chairman & CEO
